Situation at a glance
On 16 September 2026, the Kosovo Specialist Chambers convicted Rexhep Selimi and found Kadri Veseli responsible for crimes; “Kosovo Specialist Court finds no crimes against humanity by KLA leaders” reported the distinct finding on crimes against humanity, while “Former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi sentenced to 25 years for war crimes” reported Thaçi’s sentence the next day. Kosovo Police surrounded parliament ahead of a protest on 17 September, and the European Union urged restraint on 19 September as “Diaspora rallies held in support of former Kosovo Liberation Army leaders” reported demonstrations. The Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) submitted a bill to amend the Specialist Chambers law on 21 September, then backed verdict-related protests, as reported in “Kosovo’s PDK backs protests over verdict against former KLA leaders.” Albin Kurti later said Kosovo would issue a legal opinion on PDK’s bill; the government said there was no legal barrier to amendment, and Vetëvendosje requested an Assembly session. The court’s findings concerning Selimi and Veseli, the reported sentence for Thaçi, and the finding on crimes against humanity are distinct propositions; the latter does not establish that the convictions or sentence did not occur. PDK’s bill, the government’s position, Vetëvendosje’s session request and Kurti’s pledge establish a political and procedural contest, but do not establish that amendments took effect or changed the verdict.
