Mexico asserts sovereignty after alleged unauthorized CIA operation

On 2026-05-07, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reaffirmed that national sovereignty cannot be negotiated after reports that unauthorized U.S. CIA agents participated in an anti-drug operation in Chihuahua. She said the presence of foreign agents amounted to interference and said state governments cannot authorize foreign security operations. Mexico's attorney general also said it is investigating the authority under which the agents were operating.
