Sweden proposes new foreign intelligence agency

On 2026-05-05, the Swedish government moved ahead with a proposal to create a new foreign intelligence agency, according to Reuters and TV4. Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard announced the plan at a press conference in Stockholm and said the reform is intended to better match NATO and allied intelligence structures. The proposal was sent onward for legal review and is slated to start operations on 2027-01-01.
