Indian Cabinet clears Supreme Court Judges Amendment Bill to raise judge strength to 38

On 2026-05-06, the Union Cabinet of India in New Delhi approved a proposal to raise the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court from 34 to 38 judges. The government said it would introduce the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 in Parliament to help address heavy pendency and speed up case disposal.
