Germany presses Iran to reopen Strait of Hormuz and end nuclear programme

On 2026-05-03, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul pressed Iran in a telephone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and abandon its nuclear weapons programme. He said Germany supports a negotiated solution and aligned its position with a U.S. demand for Iran to renounce nuclear weapons and reopen the strait.
