On 2026-05-15, Cuba’s state utility UNE confirmed full restoration of the national electric system after a major grid collapse that had isolated Santiago de Cuba, Granma, and Guantánamo for over 24 hours. The collapse began after the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant went offline due to a boiler leak, and restoration was completed as Granma was reconnected and Unit 6 of the Máximo Gómez plant came online.
