Maine Gov. Janet Mills vetoes data center moratorium bill

On 2026-04-27, Maine Gov. Janet Mills vetoed a bill that would have imposed a statewide moratorium on data center construction until November 2027. She told the Maine Legislature she supported studying the issue but would not sign the bill because it lacked an exemption for a $550 million project in Jay. She also said she would issue an executive order to create a council to examine data centers in Maine.
