Myanmar grants amnesty to more than 4,500 prisoners for New Year

On 2026-04-17, Myanmar's President U Min Aung Hlaing granted amnesty to more than 4,500 prisoners on the first day of the Myanmar New Year. The orders pardoned 4,335 Myanmar prisoners and 179 foreign prisoners, and the foreign prisoners were expelled from the country. The move was described as intended to bring peace and humanity and enable pardoned individuals to participate in nation-building.
