Alberta scraps new electoral map and launches expedited redistribution

On 2026-04-16, the Alberta government moved to reject the independent commission’s proposed provincial electoral boundaries and launch an expedited redraw process. Government house leader Joseph Schow was to introduce a motion in the legislative assembly in Edmonton that would replace the commission’s map and raise Alberta’s MLA count to 91. The new process would be overseen by a government-led committee and would not include public consultation.
