Switzerland’s Federal Council recommends rejecting UN nuclear weapons ban without counter-proposal

On 2026-04-01, the Swiss Federal Council decided to recommend that the popular initiative calling for Switzerland to join the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons be rejected without a counter-proposal. The council said accession would be purely symbolic and could even harm Switzerland's security, and it instructed the FDFA to submit a dispatch to Parliament by autumn.
