Taxis block streets in South Africa to demand pothole road repairs

On 2026-04-08, scores of taxi drivers affiliated with the Uitenhage and District Taxi Association and SANCO blocked streets in and around Nqweba (formerly Kirkwood) to demand repairs to a potholed main road. The blockade disrupted traffic on routes to nearby towns and prevented some workers from reporting for the morning shift. Police diverted motorists and later diffused an attempt by a splinter group to close businesses; two people were taken in for questioning and later released.
