Canada suspends federal fuel excise tax until Labour Day

On 2026-04-14, the Government of Canada announced a temporary suspension of the federal fuel excise tax on gasoline and diesel until Labour Day. Prime Minister Mark Carney said the measure would cut pump prices by up to 10 cents per litre on gasoline and 4 cents on diesel, with an estimated fiscal cost of about C$2.4 billion. The government also said it would remove the excise tax on aviation fuel.
