Belize MCC deal shifts focus from education to energy projects

On 2026-04-10, Belize and the Millennium Challenge Corporation moved ahead with a revised $125 million compact after months of negotiations. The deal shifted funding away from education, which fell from $74 million to $54 million, and toward energy projects, which rose from $21 million to $42 million, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Francis Fonseca. Belize said the changes were needed to keep the agreement alive.
