European Court of Justice limits detention of rejected asylum seekers to 18 months

On 2026-04-20, the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg ruled that rejected asylum seekers in the Netherlands must be released from detention after 18 months. The decision limited Dutch authorities’ detention practice and said the total time detained while removal is attempted cannot be reset.
