Maharashtra to make Marathi mandatory for rickshaw and taxi drivers from May 1

On 2026-04-14, Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced that the state would make Marathi knowledge mandatory for all licensed rickshaw and taxi drivers from May 1. The Motor Transport Department was said to be preparing a statewide inspection campaign, with license cancellation threatened for noncompliance.
