Louisiana lawmaker proposes moving DCFS duties to Department of Health

On 2026-04-16, Louisiana Senate Health and Welfare Chairman Patrick McMath unveiled a plan to move many Department of Children and Family Services functions under the Department of Health and to shift child abuse reporting to State Police. The proposal was presented as a policy fix for the state child welfare system and would rename the agency Louisiana Department of Health and Human Services.
