UK universities to launch free speech complaints system this year

On 2026-04-20, the UK Government said a new freedom of speech complaints system for England's universities will come into force for the next academic year. The policy would let academics and other university staff take complaints directly to the Office for Students, with possible fines from April 2027 for universities found to have failed to protect free speech.
