Ghana to introduce community service sentencing to ease prison overcrowding

On 2026-04-14, Ghana's Ministry of the Interior said it would push the Community Service Bill to introduce community service sentencing as an alternative to imprisonment. The reform is aimed at easing prison overcrowding and promoting rehabilitation for minor offenders, according to Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak. Parliament's security oversight leadership also backed the proposal.
