Maine Legislature passes first-in-nation ban on major data centers

On 2026-04-14, the Maine Legislature passed an 18-month moratorium on new data centers using more than 20 megawatts of power. The measure was described as the first state-level ban of its kind and would pause large data-center development while a coordinating council develops recommendations. Gov. Janet Mills said she wants an exemption for a proposed project in Jay.
