Maldives urged to drop death penalty bill

On 2026-04-17, 10 Maldivian and international human rights organizations urged the Maldives government to withdraw plans to introduce a bill ending the country's moratorium on the death penalty and to avoid expanding capital punishment provisions. They also called on members of the People's Majlis not to pursue amendments to the Drugs Act allowing capital punishment for drug-related offenses.
